The Sierra Club´s Georgia chapter is dedicating most of its efforts this year to promoting clean energy solutions within our state, and preventing the development or implementation of new "unclean" energy projects. The organization is participating in a Georgia based and focused campaign called the "Clean Energy 4 Georgia" campaign, and considers the main problem to be that: "From smog to mercury to CO2, coal-fired power plants are one of the largest sources of dangerous air pollution in the US". Furthermore, the main issue of concern right now is the proposed construction of two environmentally dangerous, and unnecessary, coal burning power plants in Georgia.
Power 4 Georgians, the proponent for a coal plant in Washington County, claims that the new plant would: "use the best available technologies including wet flue gas desulfurization, selective catalytic reduction to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, and a high-efficiency supercritical boiler system that allows more power to be generated using less coal". However, the Sierra Club has serious doubts as to the real benefits of Power 4 Georgian´s "clean coal" technology. Moreover, the group believes that investments in renewable resources and clean energy production would be of much greater benefit to the people and environment of Georgia.
Like all Sierra Club members, the "Clean Energy 4 Georgia" campaign organizers are fully committed to the belief that all of us can make relatively simple decisions at national, state, local, and personal levels that will significantly reduce pollution.
